A 1997 Australian teen drama film directed by Steven Vidler from a screenplay by Nick Enright based on his play, which was inspired by the real-life murder of Lee Lee in 1989. The film follows 17-year-old surfer Jared Kirby (Lawrence Bruels), who witnesses the rape of 15-year-old Tracy Warner (Bojana Novakovic) by her friends at a beach party in the fictional coastal suburb of Blackrock, New South Wales. The following day, Tracy is found dead, and Jared is faced with an agonizing choice between his loyalty to his friends and his need to tell the truth. Complicating matters further is the return of his idol Rico (Simon Lyndon), a local surfing legend who is more deeply involved in the events than he initially appears. The film also marks Heath Ledger's first major film role, as Toby Acland, one of Jared's friends. The film explores themes of teenage culture, masculinity, peer pressure, and moral choice, raising questions of responsibility and the consequences of silence. Despite controversy due to its similarities to real events, the film has received praise for its honest portrayal of complex social issues and has been nominated for several Australian film awards.
