Carpentry

Is one of the oldest woodworking practices involving the crafting of household items, furniture, building structures, and decorative elements from wood. The origins of carpentry date back to the Neolithic era, when humans began using wooden tools and building shelters and utensils from timber. In Ancient Egypt, carpentry had already become a specialized craft, with early saws, chisels, and glue being used; tombs have been found with beautifully crafted furniture adorned with carvings and inlays. In Ancient Greece and Rome, carpenters were essential in shipbuilding, theatre construction, furniture making, and temple decoration. During medieval times in Europe, carpenters’ guilds emerged, passing skills from master to apprentice and contributing detailed wooden interiors to cathedrals and castles. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the invention of advanced tools such as metal-bladed planes, mortise and tenon joints, lathes, and the publication of some of the earliest woodworking manuals. In the 20th century, mass production and modern construction reduced the individuality of carpentry, but the rise of DIY culture, restoration, and handmade furniture revived the craft. Today, carpentry includes both traditional hand techniques and modern methods using power tools, CNC machines, adhesives, and advanced finishing materials. It remains relevant as a profession, a craft, and a hobby, enabling people to create unique pieces, restore antiques, participate in architectural conservation, and work with high-quality wood species. The practice requires precision, patience, artistic sensitivity, and deep knowledge of wood properties.
