Clay modeling (pottery)

Is a craft and artistic practice involving the shaping of clay objects by hand or using a potter’s wheel, followed by firing to make the items durable and functional. It originated in the Neolithic period — some of the earliest ceramic artifacts date back to around the 10th millennium BCE and have been discovered in regions corresponding to modern-day China, Japan, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Pottery played a crucial role in everyday life and culture: clay was used to make containers for storage, cooking, and serving, as well as ritual and decorative items. In Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, ceramic vessels became canvases for refined painted scenes depicting mythology and daily life. In Asia, pottery reached high artistic refinement, particularly in China and Japan, where porcelain and unique glazing techniques were developed. In medieval Europe, the craft survived through monastic and folk traditions, later expanding with industrialization. Today, clay modeling merges traditional and contemporary methods: artisans produce both functional wares and sculptural pieces, often integrating pottery with design and conceptual art. This practice requires a tactile sensitivity to the material, patience, and precision, and fosters motor skills and artistic thinking. It also serves as a form of meditative and creative expression. Contemporary studios and art schools carry on the traditions of pottery, blending handwork with emerging technologies such as 3D printing and digitally decorated ceramics.
