Soapmaking

Is an ancient practice involving the creation of soap through the chemical process of saponification, in which fats or oils react with an alkali to produce soap and glycerin. This practice originated in ancient Mesopotamia around 2800 BCE, where archaeologists found records of soap made from water, alkali, and cassia oil. It further developed in Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where soap was used not only for hygiene but also for medicinal and religious purposes. In medieval Europe, soapmaking flourished particularly in Spain, Italy, and France, with notable centers in Marseille, Castile, and Aleppo. With the advancement of chemistry in the 18th–19th centuries, the process became more efficient, as alkali could be artificially produced and soapmaking evolved into a large-scale industry. Modern artisanal soapmaking experienced a revival in the late 20th century, especially in Europe, the USA, and Russia. Homemade soap is crafted using either the cold or hot process, with natural oils such as olive, coconut, and palm, combined with lye (sodium hydroxide), and often enhanced with essential oils, colorants, herbs, spices, and decorative elements. The practice includes various directions: medicinal, cosmetic, aromatherapeutic, artistic (in the form of figurines, cakes, crystals), and eco-friendly soapmaking using organic ingredients. Soapmaking connects craftsmanship and creativity, allows for the production of a unique and useful product, supports personal health and environmental awareness, and serves as a medium for self-expression and relaxation.
