Knitting

This is a craft-based practice of creating textile items by interlocking loops of yarn using needles or other tools. Knitting dates back to ancient times, with the earliest known samples found in Egypt and the Middle East, dating to the first millennium CE, though the practice became widespread in Europe during the Middle Ages. Unlike weaving, knitting produces flexible, stretchable fabrics and allows for the creation of intricate patterns. In medieval times, it served practical purposes—producing socks, gloves, and headwear—and by the 18th and 19th centuries it became a domestic activity mostly practiced by women. In the 20th century, knitting moved beyond utility and became a form of creative expression and even an art practice: machine knitting was developed, designers incorporated knitwear into high fashion, and global communities began sharing techniques and patterns. In the 21st century, knitting has seen a resurgence—as a meditative practice, a stress-relieving hobby, a community-building tool, and an eco-friendly alternative to mass-produced clothing. Notable examples include urban knitting and yarn bombing movements, where knitted pieces are used to decorate public spaces, making art more accessible. Knitting remains one of the most enduring and multifaceted forms of handcraft, bridging the utilitarian and the artistic.
