The Japanese animated television series in the genres of science fiction and neo-noir, directed by Shinichirō Watanabe and produced by Sunrise, first aired in 1998. Set in the year 2071, fifty years after a hyperspace gateway accident rendered Earth nearly uninhabitable, humanity has colonized the planets and moons of the Solar System. To combat rising crime, a system of licensed bounty hunters, known as "cowboys," was established. The story follows the crew of the spaceship Bebop: Spike Spiegel (voiced by Kōichi Yamadera), a former hitman of the Red Dragon Syndicate; Jet Black (voiced by Unshō Ishizuka), a former police officer; Faye Valentine (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara), an amnesiac con artist; Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV (voiced by Aoi Tada), an eccentric young hacker; and Ein, a genetically engineered corgi with human-like intelligence. The series blends elements of westerns, noir, and jazz, exploring themes of loneliness, loss, and the inescapability of the past. The central narrative focuses on Spike's confrontation with Vicious (voiced by Norio Wakamoto), the ambitious leader of the Red Dragon Syndicate, and their shared history involving a woman named Julia (voiced by Gara Takashima). The series is acclaimed for its unique atmosphere, complex characters, and outstanding soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno.
