An American satirical tragicomedy released in 2021, directed by Adam McKay. The plot follows two astronomers—graduate student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio)—who discover a massive comet hurtling towards Earth. Its impact is inevitable and will cause a global catastrophe. The scientists try to alert authorities and the public, but they face apathy, bureaucracy, and corporate greed. U.S. President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her son, Chief of Staff Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill), manipulate the situation for political gain, while tech billionaire Peter Isherwell (Mark Rylance) sees a business opportunity in the disaster. The media turns scientific warnings into a spectacle, and society is divided between those who believe in science and those who dismiss it. As the comet draws closer, Mindy and Dibiasky realize the futility of fighting the absurd system but remain steadfast in their convictions. The film satirizes modern society, politicians, corporations, and the culture of science denial. It received mixed but mostly positive reviews, was nominated for an Academy Award, and became one of the most talked-about films of the year.
