Is a literary creative practice that involves writing stories, novellas, or novels based on pre-existing works, including books, films, TV shows, games, anime, or real-life people. While the roots of fanfiction can be traced back to the 19th century, when fans of popular novels wrote sequels or alternate versions, modern fanfiction culture emerged in the 1960s in the United States during the rise of “Star Trek” fandom, where enthusiasts began creating their own stories about beloved characters. The practice evolved through fan-made magazines (fanzines) and transitioned into the digital realm with platforms like FanFiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and Wattpad, where millions of users publish and read fanfiction. It allows writers to explore alternate universes (AU), expand secondary characters, alter canonical events (fix-it fiction), or fulfill personal fantasies, including romantic and erotic themes. Fanfiction often serves as a tool for representation, particularly of LGBTQ+ characters, who may be underrepresented in original works. This form of writing enables aspiring authors to develop literary skills, engage with audiences, and receive feedback. Although not officially part of the original canon, fanfiction plays a significant role in fan culture by creating a vibrant, democratic, and intertextual space for self-expression, collective imagination, and creative exploration.
