The 2006 American war drama film, directed, produced, and scored by Clint Eastwood, is based on the book of the same name by James Bradley and Ron Powers. It tells the story of six American servicemen—five Marines and one Navy corpsman—who were involved in the iconic flag-raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. The narrative unfolds in two timelines: first, through the recollections of John "Doc" Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), one of the surviving flag-raisers, as his son seeks to understand what happened at Iwo Jima and how it affected his father; second, through the actual events of the battle, depicting the horrors of war and the bravery of the soldiers. After the flag-raising, the three survivors—Bradley, Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach)—return to the United States, where they are celebrated as heroes and participate in a war bond drive. However, the fame and public attention become a heavy burden, especially for Hayes, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and guilt over the deaths of his comrades. The film explores themes of heroism, memory, truth, and manipulation, illustrating how a single image can alter the perception of war and the destinies of those involved.
