Captain Corelli's Mandolin

A 2001 British-French-American war film directed by John Madden, based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Louis de Bernières. Set during World War II on the Greek island of Cephalonia, occupied by Italian and German forces, the story follows Captain Antonio Corelli (Nicolas Cage), who commands a garrison of the Italian 33rd Acqui Infantry Division. Known for his jovial personality and passion for the mandolin, Corelli trains his soldiers in choral singing, reflecting his love for music. He is billeted in the home of the local physician, Dr. Iannis (John Hurt), and his daughter Pelagia (Penélope Cruz), an educated and strong-willed woman engaged to local fisherman Mandras (Christian Bale), who has gone off to fight against the occupying forces. The situation intensifies when Italy surrenders to the Allies in 1943, leaving Italian soldiers on the island in a precarious position as their former German allies demand their disarmament. Corelli and his men choose to resist the Germans, leading to tragic consequences. The film portrays the brutality of war, particularly through the events known as the Massacre of the Acqui Division, where thousands of Italian soldiers were executed by German forces on Cephalonia. Corelli narrowly survives the mass execution, saved by the self-sacrifice of one of his soldiers who shields him. Mandras, having returned to the island, discovers the wounded Corelli and brings him to Pelagia for medical care. In a candid conversation, Mandras admits he never responded to her letters due to his illiteracy. Realizing Pelagia no longer loves him, Mandras departs. After recovering, Corelli leaves the island, leaving behind a record of a melody he composed for Pelagia. Years later, following a devastating earthquake on Cephalonia, Corelli returns to Pelagia, and they reunite. The film explores themes of love, loyalty, betrayal, and the impact of war, highlighting the complex moral choices faced by individuals during occupation and conflict.
