The 2001 American-British-German satirical black comedy directed by Gregor Jordan, co-written with Eric Weiss and Nora Maccoby, is based on Robert O'Connor's novel of the same name. Set in West Germany in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the film follows U.S. Army Supply Specialist Ray Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix), who engages in various illicit activities, including heroin production and black-market dealings. His commanding officer, Colonel Berman (Ed Harris), remains oblivious to Elwood's criminal undertakings. The arrival of new First Sergeant Robert Lee (Scott Glenn), a Vietnam veteran, disrupts Elwood's operations as Lee begins investigating the corruption. In retaliation, Elwood starts a relationship with Lee's daughter, Robyn (Anna Paquin), escalating tensions. After discovering a cache of weapons following an accidental explosion, Elwood plans to trade them with a Turkish gangster for opium. However, the plan unravels when his roommate, Private Knoll (Gabriel Mann), is revealed to be an undercover officer from the Inspector General's Office. The film culminates in an explosion at the heroin lab, resulting in Lee's death. Elwood survives and is reassigned to Hawaii, where he continues his schemes. Blending elements of war drama, crime thriller, and satire, the film critiques military bureaucracy and corruption. The cast also includes Dean Stockwell, Leon Robinson, and Michael Peña. The score was composed by David Holmes, with cinematography by Oliver Stapleton. The film received positive reviews, particularly for Phoenix's performance, and earned five nominations at the British Independent Film Awards, including Best British Independent Film and Best Actor.
