The 2004 Canadian historical drama directed by John Kent Harrison is based on true events and follows Lieutenant Harry Colebourn (Michael Fassbender), a veterinarian with the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps. In August 1914, during the onset of World War I, while en route to a training camp in Valcartier, Quebec, Harry purchases an orphaned bear cub from a hunter at a train station in White River, Ontario. Naming the cub Winnie after his hometown of Winnipeg, Harry brings her to the camp, where she becomes the unit's mascot and a source of comfort for the soldiers. Despite objections from superiors, including the stern Colonel John Barret (David Suchet), Winnie accompanies the troops to England, continuing to boost morale. When the unit is deployed to the front lines in France, Harry makes the difficult decision to leave Winnie at the London Zoo, where she becomes a beloved attraction. Among her admirers is young Christopher Robin, son of author A.A. Milne, who is inspired to create the cherished Winnie-the-Pooh stories. The film delves into themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the profound impact animals can have on human lives, illustrating how a simple act of kindness can resonate through history.
