The 1964 American-Philippine adventure film directed by Monte Hellman, with a screenplay by Jack Nicholson based on a story by Hellman and Fred Roos, unfolds in Asia where Joe Gaines (Dewey Martin), an American, meets the enigmatic Jay Wickham (Jack Nicholson) in a casino. Wickham is in pursuit of stolen diamonds he believes are with Lei Ling (Juliet Prado). Along with other characters, including Lorgren (Vic Diaz), his mistress Destiny Cooper (Fay Spain), and Ling's associate Ross (John Hackett), they board a plane heading to the Philippines. The plane crashes in the jungle; Ross dies, handing the diamonds to Joe. Wickham, eager to claim the jewels, kills Lorgren, shoots Destiny, and attempts to flee but is wounded by Joe. Before dying, Wickham throws the diamonds into a river. Joe is left alone, awaiting the approach of hostile natives. The film delves into themes of greed, betrayal, and survival under extreme conditions, showcasing Nicholson's early work as both actor and screenwriter.
