Game development as an independent cultural and technical activity began to emerge in the mid-20th century with the advent of early computers and arcade machines, and rapidly evolved with the introduction of home consoles in the 1980s. Since then, the gaming industry has grown into one of the largest and most influential sectors of culture and economy, covering numerous genres—from text adventures and platformers to shooters, strategy games, RPGs, simulations, and casual mobile games. Game development involves interdisciplinary teams where both technical and creative skills are crucial, including writers, artists, game designers, programmers, composers, testers, and producers. A game can be created by a large studio with a multimillion-dollar budget or by an individual indie developer. The practice includes both commercial production and hobbyist creativity, as well as educational and therapeutic applications. Milestones in its history include releases of games like Pong, Super Mario Bros., DOOM, The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Sims, World of Warcraft, and Fortnite, which defined entire eras. Distribution platforms (Steam, App Store, itch.io) and engines (Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot) have significantly lowered the barrier to entry. Games have become subjects of academic research, new artistic mediums, tools for self-expression, and spaces for experimentation. The practice of game development reflects both technological progress and the cultural, social, and political transformations of society, becoming a form of communication, education, and even activism.
