The 2014 American drama "Good Kill," directed by Andrew Niccol, follows U.S. Air Force Major Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke), a former F-16 fighter pilot now operating armed MQ-9 Reaper drones from a base near Las Vegas. His missions involve targeting terrorist threats in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia as part of the "War on Terror." Initially viewing his role as less perilous, Egan begins to grapple with moral dilemmas, especially when under CIA directives to strike targets with high risks of collateral damage, including women and children. As his psychological state deteriorates, he turns to alcohol, and his relationships with his wife Molly (January Jones) and children suffer. The guilt over civilian casualties leads to an internal crisis. After refusing an order to attack a group of civilians, Egan fakes a technical malfunction to avoid the strike. Later, observing a man who had previously committed rape, he independently decides to eliminate him, defying orders. The film delves into themes of moral responsibility, the psychological impact of remote warfare, and the personal struggle with ethical decisions.
