A Private War

The 2018 American biographical war drama film directed by Matthew Heineman is based on the Vanity Fair article "Marie Colvin’s Private War" by Marie Brenner. The film chronicles the life and career of Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), a renowned war correspondent for The Sunday Times, who reported from conflict zones including Chechnya, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. In 2001, while on assignment in Sri Lanka, Colvin loses her left eye due to a grenade explosion and subsequently wears an eye patch. Despite suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and personal struggles, including alcoholism and unstable relationships, she continues her work, determined to expose the suffering of civilians in war-torn regions. Her partner and photographer, Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan), accompanies her on dangerous assignments. The film details their work in Iraq and Libya, culminating in their final mission in Homs, Syria, in 2012, where Colvin and French photographer Rémi Ochlik are killed during an artillery strike.
