The Man with the Iron Heart

The 2017 historical biographical thriller directed by Cédric Jimenez is based on Laurent Binet's novel "HHhH" and chronicles the life and assassination of one of the most brutal Nazi leaders, Reinhard Heydrich. The film begins with Heydrich's (Jason Clarke) early career as a German naval officer, who, after a scandal leading to his dismissal, joins the Nazi Party under the influence of his wife Lina (Rosamund Pike). Through ambition and ruthlessness, he rapidly ascends the ranks to become head of the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA) and a principal architect of the "Final Solution." In 1941, Heydrich is appointed Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, ruling with terror and repression. Parallelly, the narrative follows two young Czech paratroopers, Jozef Gabčík (Jack Reynor) and Jan Kubiš (Jack O'Connell), who, after training in the UK, are dispatched to Prague with a mission to assassinate Heydrich under Operation Anthropoid. They find shelter with local residents, including Anna Novak (Mia Wasikowska), with whom one develops a romantic relationship. Following the successful assassination attempt in May 1942, leading to Heydrich's death from injuries, the Nazis retaliate brutally, including the destruction of the village of Lidice. The film culminates in the tragic deaths of Gabčík and Kubiš, who, after seeking refuge in a Prague church, fight valiantly before taking their own lives to avoid capture. The film was praised for its strong performances and accurate depiction of historical events, though some critics noted its overly documentary style and lack of emotional depth.
