Guilty by Suspicion

A 1991 American period drama directed by Irwin Winkler in his directorial debut, based on his own screenplay. The film is set in 1950s Hollywood during the height of McCarthyism and the activities of the House Un-American Activities Committee, which led to widespread blacklisting in the entertainment industry. The protagonist, successful director David Merrill (Robert De Niro), returns to the U.S. after a trip abroad to find his colleagues being interrogated and pressured to name suspected communists. Merrill is offered a deal: if he names several acquaintances, including screenwriter and childhood friend Bunny Baxter (George Wendt), he can continue his career. Refusing to comply, Merrill is blacklisted, loses his job, assets, and the support of friends. His ex-wife Ruth (Annette Bening) assists him in coping with the challenges, despite her own struggles. The film also features Patricia Wettig (Dorothy Nolan), Sam Wanamaker (Felix Graff), Chris Cooper (Larry Nolan), and Martin Scorsese (Joe Lesser). The story delves into the moral dilemmas faced by individuals under political repression, exploring themes of conscience, betrayal, and personal responsibility. Despite positive critical reception, the film grossed approximately $9.5 million against a $13 million budget. It was entered into the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and was praised for its topical subject matter and performances.
