Hockey

A team-based sports practice involving sticks and a puck (or ball), developed in Canada in 1875 when James Creighton organized the first official indoor ice game in Montreal, combining elements of stick-and-ball games played in Europe. Initially, hockey evolved as an adaptation of field games to winter conditions, gaining popularity among British soldiers and Canadian students. The first official rules were soon established, clubs were formed, and in 1893, the Stanley Cup was introduced—the oldest trophy in North American professional sports. In the 20th century, hockey became one of the most prominent winter sports, receiving international recognition and becoming an Olympic discipline starting in 1920. Beyond classic ice hockey, the practice includes variations such as field hockey, bandy, and roller hockey. The game requires speed, precision, strength, endurance, strategic thinking, and coordinated teamwork. Hockey has become a vital part of the sporting culture in countries like Canada, Russia, the USA, Sweden, and Finland. The practice is closely tied to the emergence of major leagues such as the National Hockey League (NHL) and the fame of legendary players like Wayne Gretzky, Vladislav Tretiak, and Mario Lemieux.
