Rugby

A full-contact team sport practice that originated in 1823 in England when, according to legend, a student of Rugby School named William Webb Ellis picked up the ball during a football match and ran with it, laying the foundation for a new sport. Although the accuracy of this anecdote is debated, it marks the symbolic beginning of rugby as a distinct practice. During the 19th century, the game quickly spread across British schools and universities and was later formalized with the establishment of official rules and the founding of the Rugby Football Union in 1871. Over time, different versions of rugby developed, including rugby union (15s), rugby sevens, and rugby league. The practice requires high levels of physical endurance, strength, coordination, and teamwork, as players aim to advance an oval ball across the opponent’s goal line using hand passes and physical confrontations. Rugby became an international discipline, featured in the Olympic Games (in the rugby sevens format) and supported by major competitions such as the Rugby World Cup, the Six Nations Championship, and more. The practice of rugby has significantly influenced the evolution of other sports, particularly American football, and has become a vital part of the cultural and athletic identity of countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, England, France, and Australia.
