A team-based sports practice involving a ball and specialized netted sticks, lacrosse originated among the Indigenous peoples of North America long before European colonization. It served not only as a competitive sport but also held deep religious, cultural, and military significance, functioning as a means to resolve conflicts, prepare warriors, and reinforce communal identity. Traditional games could last for days, involve hundreds of participants, and span fields several kilometers long. After contact with Europeans, especially French missionaries in the 17th century, the practice underwent significant changes and was adapted to European sports frameworks. Modern lacrosse began to take shape in mid-19th century Canada, where the first clubs were founded and official rules codified. Today, multiple forms of lacrosse exist, including men's, women's, and box lacrosse, each with distinct rules, equipment, and gameplay formats. The sport demands high physical fitness, agility, speed, and strong teamwork. Lacrosse is recognized as Canada's national summer sport and is also widely practiced in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries. In the 21st century, the sport has experienced a surge in popularity, marked by an increase in collegiate teams, the emergence of professional leagues, and inclusion in international competition programs.
