A 1989 American drama directed by Norman Jewison. The film follows 17-year-old Samantha Hughes (Emily Lloyd), who resides in the fictional town of Hopewell, Kentucky. Her father, Dwayne, was killed in Vietnam at the age of 21, leaving Samantha with her mother, Irene (Joan Allen). Obsessed with learning more about her father, Samantha seeks assistance from her uncle, Emmett Smith (Bruce Willis), a Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Irene, having moved to Lexington with her new husband, wishes for Samantha to enroll in college and start anew. However, Samantha chooses to stay with Emmett and continue her quest for information about her father. Discovering old photographs, medals, and letters of Dwayne intensifies her desire to understand who he was. Ultimately, Samantha, Emmett, and her grandmother visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., where finding Dwayne's name on the wall becomes a cathartic moment for the entire family.
