Kneecap

The 2024 Irish-British comedy-drama film directed by Rich Peppiatt tells a semi-autobiographical story of the formation of the Belfast-based hip-hop trio Kneecap. The band members—Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin), Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh), and DJ Próvaí (JJ Ó Dochartaigh)—play themselves, adding authenticity and emotional depth to the narrative. Set in the late 2010s in the Gaeltacht Quarter of West Belfast, the film follows two young men from the "ceasefire generation" who grapple with cultural and linguistic assimilation. After a chance meeting with DJ Próvaí, an Irish language translator at a police station, they unite to form a music group that becomes the voice of protest for the youth. The film explores themes of identity, language, political activism, and post-conflict Irish culture, blending humor, energetic musical performances, and elements of psychedelic visual style. The cast also includes Michael Fassbender (Arlo), Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, and Simone Kirby. Premiering on January 18, 2024, at the Sundance Film Festival, "Kneecap" became the first Irish-language film to be featured at the festival and won the NEXT Audience Award. It was also showcased at the 36th Galway Film Fleadh, receiving awards for Best Irish Film, Audience Award, and Best Irish Language Feature Film. Although selected as Ireland's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, it did not secure a nomination. Nevertheless, "Kneecap" garnered six BAFTA nominations and has been instrumental in promoting Irish-language cinema.
