The 1955 American historical drama film directed by Arthur Lubin is set in 11th-century England. King Edward the Confessor orders Saxon lord Leofric to marry a Norman woman, Yolanda, but Leofric refuses and is imprisoned. In jail, he meets Godiva, the sheriff of Coventry's sister, and they fall in love. Despite political tensions and the growing conflict between Saxons and Normans, they marry. Godiva becomes an active participant in advocating for her people's rights. In the film's climax, to demonstrate the unity of the Saxons and their resistance to Norman oppression, Godiva undertakes her famous nude ride through the streets of Coventry. Maureen O'Hara plays Lady Godiva, with George Nader in the role of Lord Leofric. Victor McLaglen is Grimald, Rex Reason is Harold, Torin Thatcher is Lord Godwin, and Eduard Franz is King Edward. Notably, Clint Eastwood appears in one of his earliest roles as a Saxon. The film blends romance, political drama, and legend, offering a fictionalized account of the well-known historical myth.
