Silence

The 2016 American historical drama directed by Martin Scorsese is based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. Set in the 17th century, the film follows two young Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), who journey from Portugal to Japan via Macau to locate their mentor, Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson), rumored to have renounced his faith under torture. Upon arrival, they find Christianity outlawed, with believers facing brutal persecution by the shogunate. The priests witness the suffering and execution of Japanese Christians, forced to step on a fumi-e—a carved image of Christ—to prove their apostasy. Garupe drowns attempting to save believers, while Rodrigues is captured and confronts a moral dilemma: apostatize to save others or remain steadfast, condemning others to suffering. The film delves into profound themes of faith, martyrdom, and internal struggle, questioning the meaning of sacrifice and God's silence in the face of suffering. Scorsese developed this passion project over 25 years. The film was critically acclaimed for its direction, Rodrigo Prieto's cinematography, and performances, particularly by Garfield and Neeson, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
