Lady Godiva Rides Again

The 1951 British comedy film directed by Frank Launder follows the story of Marjorie Clark (Pauline Stroud), a naive and ambitious waitress from a small industrial town in the Midlands. During a rainy Sunday cinema outing with her boyfriend Johnny (George Cole), she notices an advertisement for a competition to portray Lady Godiva in the town's annual festival. Despite objections from Johnny and her father (Stanley Holloway), Marjorie decides to participate and unexpectedly wins. Her victory brings local fame and propels her into the world of show business. She is invited to compete in a national beauty pageant and becomes the face of a prominent soap brand. Along the way, she encounters various characters, including seasoned beauty contestant Dolores August (Diana Dors), leading to humorous and satirical situations that reflect the beauty and fame industry. The film is notable for featuring early appearances by future stars such as Joan Collins and Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed in the United Kingdom. Filming took place in Folkestone, Kent, utilizing locations like Leas Cliff Hall and Rotunda Amusement Park. Although retitled "Bikini Baby" for the U.S. release, the film received positive reviews for its satire on beauty pageants and show business.
