The 1956 American comedy-drama film directed by Daniel Mann is based on John Patrick's play, which was itself adapted from Vern J. Sneider's novel. Set on the island of Okinawa following the end of World War II, the story follows Captain Fisby (Glenn Ford), who is assigned by his commanding officer, Colonel Wainwright Purdy III (Paul Ford), to promote the "Americanization" of the village of Tobiki. He is assisted by a local interpreter, Sakini (Marlon Brando), a cunning and insightful Okinawan. Fisby attempts to implement American customs, including constructing a pentagon-shaped school, but the villagers prefer to build a traditional teahouse. Gradually, influenced by Sakini and the geisha Lotus Blossom (Machiko Kyō), Fisby becomes immersed in the local culture and accedes to the villagers' wishes. To support the village's economy, Fisby suggests producing souvenirs such as cricket cages and wooden geta sandals, but these items fail to attract buyers. He then discovers that the villagers can produce a potent sweet potato brandy, which becomes popular among American soldiers, providing the village with the funds needed to construct the teahouse. Concerned by the lack of reports, Colonel Purdy sends psychiatrist Captain McLean (Eddie Albert) to assess Fisby's mental state. However, McLean also becomes enamored with the local culture and advocates for organic farming. When Purdy arrives in the village, he finds Fisby and McLean fully integrated into the community and participating in the teahouse's opening celebration. Enraged, Purdy orders the teahouse demolished, but soon learns that the village has been selected as a model example of successful democratization, leading to the teahouse's restoration. The film received critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming MGM's highest-grossing film of that year. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Film Promoting International Understanding. Marlon Brando's portrayal of the Okinawan Sakini sparked controversy due to the use of makeup to alter his appearance, now regarded as an example of "yellowface" in the film industry.
