This 2012 American crime drama film, directed by Sheldon Candis, follows 11-year-old Woody Watson (Michael Rainey Jr.), who lives with his grandmother (Lonette McKee) in Baltimore and longs to reunite with his mother, currently in rehab in North Carolina. His uncle Vincent (Common), recently released after serving 12 years in prison, aims to start anew by opening a seafood restaurant. Vincent takes Woody along to teach him what it means to be a man, leading them through various challenges in the city. When the bank denies Vincent a loan, he turns to his former crime boss, Mr. Fish (Dennis Haysbert), agreeing to one last job to secure the necessary funds. As events unfold, Vincent and Woody encounter dangerous situations, including confrontations with former associates and the police, prompting Woody to reconsider his notions of adulthood and masculinity. The film delves into themes of fatherhood, moral choices, and the impact of one's environment on personal development. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 and was released theatrically on January 18, 2013.
