The 1965 American war thriller, based on the novel of the same name by German writer Werner Jörg Lüddecke, follows Robert Crain (Marlon Brando), a German engineer and pacifist who fled to India during World War II, posing as a Swiss citizen. The British intelligence, led by Colonel Statter (Trevor Howard), blackmails Crain into participating in a mission to seize the German merchant ship "Ingo," transporting scarce rubber from Japan to occupied Bordeaux. Since all German ships are ordered to scuttle themselves to prevent capture, Crain's task is to board under the guise of SS officer Hans Keil and disable the scuttling charges, allowing the Allies to seize the cargo. Onboard, he encounters Captain Mueller (Yul Brynner), a patriotic German with humanistic inclinations, and First Officer Kruse (Martin Benrath), a fanatical Nazi. Crain begins locating and disarming the charges while manipulating Kruse and gaining Mueller's trust. The situation becomes more complex when prisoners, including Jewish woman Esther Levy (Janet Margolin), who has suffered abuse from the Nazis, are brought aboard. Crain attempts to organize a mutiny with the prisoners' help, but the plan fails, leading to Esther's death. Ultimately, Crain manages to detonate the charges, preventing the ship from falling into Nazi hands. The film delves into themes of morality, betrayal, and difficult choices during wartime. Despite positive critical reviews, it was a commercial failure and received two Academy Award nominations for Best Black-and-White Cinematography (Conrad L. Hall) and Best Costume Design (Moss Mabry).
