Back Door to Hell

The 1964 American-Filipino war film directed by Monte Hellman, with a screenplay by John Hackett and Richard A. Guttman, follows three American soldiers—Lt. Craig (Jimmie Rodgers), Burnett (Jack Nicholson), and Jersey (John Hackett)—who land in the Philippines during World War II to pave the way for General MacArthur's return by destroying a Japanese communications center. Assisted by local guerrillas led by Paco (Conrad Maga), they confront the brutality of Japanese occupiers who have taken village children hostage. After successfully rescuing the children and capturing Japanese prisoners, tensions arise between the Americans and guerrillas over interrogation methods and the execution of captives. Seeking intelligence on Japanese positions, they encounter bandit leader Ramundo (Johnny Monteiro), who demands a radio in exchange for information but, upon not receiving it immediately, destroys the equipment. In the climax, during an infiltration of a Japanese shortwave station, Burnett is killed after transmitting vital information, and Paco sacrifices himself to cover Jersey's retreat with Burnett's body. The arrival of American forces signals the beginning of liberation, but the survivors mourn the fallen, including Maria (Annabelle Huggins) and fellow guerrillas. Filmed on location in the Philippines with a budget of $80,000, the film delves into themes of sacrifice, moral dilemmas, and cross-cultural cooperation amidst the horrors of war.
