The 1964 British historical war film directed by Cy Endfield portrays the heroic defense of the missionary post at Rorke's Drift in January 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu War. Following the British Army's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana, approximately 150 soldiers of the 24th Welsh Regiment, including the sick and wounded, find themselves isolated and compelled to defend the mission and hospital against an assault by about 4,000 Zulu warriors. Leadership of the defense is undertaken by Royal Engineer Lieutenant John Chard (Stanley Baker) and the young aristocratic officer Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead (Michael Caine), who experience disagreements over strategy and command. Other key characters include Corporal Allen (Glynn Edwards), Colour Sergeant Bourne (Nigel Green), Private Hook (James Booth), as well as missionary Otto Witt (Jack Hawkins) and his daughter Margareta (Ulla Jacobsson), who witness the unfolding events. The film opens with a vivid depiction of a Zulu wedding ceremony, showcasing the rich culture and traditions of the Zulu people, and emphasizing their military discipline and strategy. Notably, the role of Zulu King Cetshwayo is portrayed by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a descendant of the king. Despite the overwhelming numerical superiority of the enemy, the British soldiers exhibit courage and resilience, repelling numerous attacks. For this defense, 11 soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross. The film is acclaimed for its authentic portrayal of historical events, intense atmosphere, and in-depth character development, and it marked Michael Caine's debut in a leading role, bringing him widespread recognition.
