The 1985 British historical drama directed by Hugh Hudson tells the story of fur trapper Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) and his son Ned (Dexter Fletcher) during the American Revolution. Arriving in New York City on July 4, 1776, they witness the declaration of independence and the toppling of the statue of the King of England. A mob seizes Tom's boat and goods to bankroll the revolution. Ned, against his father's wishes, signs up as a drummer boy in the Continental Army. To protect Ned, Tom reluctantly joins the army as well. Throughout the war, they encounter idealistic aristocrat Daisy McConnahay (Nastassja Kinski), who volunteers as a nurse and cook for the Patriots, and the arrogant British Sergeant Major Peasy (Donald Sutherland). The film intricately portrays their involvement in key battles, including the Battle of Brooklyn Heights and the Siege of Yorktown, as well as the personal trials and moral dilemmas they face amidst the revolution. Despite their pursuit of freedom and justice, the characters must confront the brutality of war, betrayal, and loss, ultimately leading them to reevaluate their values and seek a new beginning in post-war America.
