The 2014 American-German war film directed by George Clooney, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Grant Heslov, is based on the book "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History" by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter. The story follows a real-life mission during World War II where a special Allied unit composed of museum curators, architects, and art historians is tasked with recovering cultural artifacts stolen by the Nazis. Lieutenant Frank Stokes (George Clooney) convinces President Roosevelt of the necessity of such a group. The team includes Lieutenant James Granger (Matt Damon), Sergeant Richard Campbell (Bill Murray), Sergeant Walter Garfield (John Goodman), Lieutenant Jean-Claude Clermont (Jean Dujardin), Private Preston Savitz (Bob Balaban), Lieutenant Donald Jeffries (Hugh Bonneville), and Claire Simone (Cate Blanchett), a French curator based on Rose Valland. The group faces challenges including skepticism from Allied commanders, dangers on the front lines, and competition from Soviet forces also seeking the artworks. Despite losses, including the deaths of Jeffries and Clermont, the team discovers caches containing thousands of art pieces, such as the Ghent Altarpiece and Michelangelo's Madonna of Bruges, managing to save them before the arrival of Soviet troops. The film raises questions about the value of art and human life, concluding with a scene where an elderly Stokes visits a museum with his grandson in 1977. The film received mixed reviews from critics but grossed $156.4 million worldwide against a budget of $70–91 million.
