Glory

The 1989 American historical war drama directed by Edward Zwick, with a screenplay by Kevin Jarre based on the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the books "Lay This Laurel" by Lincoln Kirstein and "One Gallant Rush" by Peter Burchard, depicts the formation and combat journey of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment—one of the first African American units in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), a young officer from a Boston abolitionist family, is appointed to lead the newly formed regiment composed of Black soldiers, including former slaves and free men from the North. Among them are the determined and often confrontational Private Trip (Denzel Washington), the steady Sergeant John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), and the educated Corporal Thomas Searles (Andre Braugher). Shaw faces prejudice from military leadership, a lack of resources, and the threat of execution for Black soldiers if captured. Despite internal conflicts and external challenges, the regiment earns the right to engage in combat and demonstrates exceptional bravery in the assault on Fort Wagner, where Shaw and many of his men are killed. The film received critical acclaim, winning three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington, and stands as a significant contribution to the cinematic portrayal of African Americans' role in U.S. history.
