The first game in the Mortal Kombat series to be fully rendered in 3D while maintaining the classic 2D gameplay. Mortal Kombat 4 introduced updated graphics, new combat mechanics, and an expanded roster featuring returning characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden, along with new fighters such as Shinnok and Quan Chi. A key innovation was the addition of weapons that could be used in combat, picked up from opponents, and even thrown. The signature Fatalities became even more brutal and visually striking thanks to the capabilities of 3D graphics. The story revolves around the fallen Elder God Shinnok's attempt to conquer Earthrealm, with warriors fighting to stop him. The game was initially released for arcade machines before being ported to PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and PC, becoming one of the most popular entries in the franchise at the time. Mortal Kombat 4 received positive reviews for preserving the series' essence while transitioning to 3D, though it was also criticized for simplified animations and certain mechanical changes.
