A 2002 American crime drama film directed by Daniel Algrant and written by Jon Robin Baitz. The story follows Eli Wurman (Al Pacino), an aging Jewish publicist whose career is nearing its end. Eli dreams of retirement but only knows how to hustle, cajole, threaten, and persuade. His chaotic daily life is fueled by a steady stream of prescription drugs and alcohol. One night, his last major client, actor Cary Launer (Ryan O'Neal), who is considering a political campaign, asks Eli to handle his latest problem: an affair with Jilli Hopper (Téa Leoni), a television personality with a drug habit. Jilli takes Eli to an underground club for the rich and famous, where she seeks a certain "item." After an incident with the club's security, Eli takes her back to a hotel room, where, under the influence of drugs, he witnesses what appears to be her rape and murder but cannot be certain due to his impaired state. The next day, Eli is busy organizing a charity event but is approached by police and various acquaintances trying to determine what he remembers about that night. Gradually, Eli realizes he has become entangled in a dangerous political game, and his life is at risk. The film explores themes of moral decay, political intrigue, and personal demons faced by the protagonist. The cast also includes Kim Basinger as Victoria, Eli's former sister-in-law who has affectionate feelings for him, and Téa Leoni as Jilli Hopper, the troubled television personality. Filming took place in New York City in February 2001. The film premiered in Italy on October 11, 2002, and in the United States on April 25, 2003. "People I Know" received mixed reviews from critics; some praised Al Pacino's performance, while others criticized the film's uncertain tone and plot inconsistencies. The film grossed approximately $5.5 million worldwide.
