A 2016 American crime drama film directed by Stephen Gaghan and written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman. The film is based on the true events of the 1997 Bre-X mining scandal, where a massive gold deposit was allegedly discovered in the jungles of Indonesia; however, for legal reasons and to enhance the film's appeal, character names and story details were changed. The protagonist, Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), is a down-and-out businessman striving to continue his family's mining enterprise. In pursuit of fortune, he partners with geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez) and ventures into the Indonesian jungles in search of gold. However, as success mounts, suspicions about the discovery's authenticity arise, leading to investigations and a collapse in the company's stock.
