A 1988 American drama directed by Marisa Silver. The film portrays the life of high school student David Sinclair (Alan Boyce), who appears to be the perfect teenager: intelligent, talented, popular, and charming. However, beneath his seemingly flawless exterior, David struggles with internal turmoil and the pressure of expectations from his parents and society. His best friend, Chris Townsend (Keanu Reeves), a more eccentric and carefree individual, fails to notice the depth of David's suffering. During a party at the coast, David takes a walk to a cliff and commits suicide, shocking his friends and family. Initially perceived as an accident, Chris later receives a suicide note, confirming David's intentions. Overwhelmed and guilt-ridden, Chris, along with David's girlfriend, Lauren (Jennifer Rubin), seeks to honor their friend's memory, facing resistance from the school administration, which refuses to hold an official memorial service. The film delves deeply into themes of teenage depression, the pressure of expectations, friendship, and the grieving process, depicting how those left behind struggle to cope with the loss and find meaning in the tragedy. Filming took place in Portland and at Yaquina Head near Newport on the Oregon Coast, providing an authentic backdrop of the American Pacific Northwest.
