The 1988 American martial arts action film directed by Newt Arnold follows the story of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), an American fighter trained in Eastern martial arts. Frank decides to participate in the underground Kumite tournament, held in Hong Kong, known for its brutal and deadly fights. This secret competition gathers the strongest fighters from around the world, where battles are fought without rules. From a young age, Frank was trained by Master Senzo Tanaka (Roy Chiao), becoming the only non-Asian disciple to fully dedicate himself to the traditions of ninjutsu. In Hong Kong, he meets journalist Janice Kent (Leah Ayres), who is investigating the tournament’s violence, and befriends the burly yet good-natured fighter Ray Jackson (Donald Gibb). However, his greatest challenge comes in the form of the ruthless Kumite champion Chong Li (Bolo Yeung), notorious for his vicious and lethal techniques. Meanwhile, U.S. military police agents Helmer (Norman Burton) and Rawlins (Forest Whitaker) pursue Frank, aiming to bring him back to service. As the tournament progresses, Frank must face his ultimate challenge against Chong Li, using everything he has learned to prove his strength, survive, and avenge fallen fighters. The film became a cult classic due to its intense fight scenes, Van Damme’s charismatic performance, and the showcase of diverse martial arts styles.
