Prince

An American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, born on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he began his musical career in 1975. He was known for his unique style that blended elements of funk, rock, R&B, pop, synth-pop, and jazz, as well as his flamboyant stage persona and wide vocal range, including falsetto and high-pitched screams. Prince self-produced his albums, often playing all instruments, and pioneered the "Minneapolis sound." His breakthrough came with the albums "Dirty Mind" (1980), "Controversy" (1981), and "1999" (1982), the latter becoming his first top-10 album on the Billboard 200. In 1984, he reached the peak of fame with the film and album "Purple Rain," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and included the hit "When Doves Cry." After disbanding The Revolution, he released "Sign o' the Times" (1987), widely acclaimed as his greatest work. In 1993, protesting restrictions from Warner Bros., he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and became known as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince." He founded Paisley Park Records and released numerous albums, including "Diamonds and Pearls" (1991), "The Gold Experience" (1995), and "Musicology" (2004). Prince won seven Grammy Awards and an Oscar, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He died on April 21, 2016, from an accidental fentanyl overdose at the age of 57. His legacy lives on through posthumous releases from his extensive music vault and the memoir "The Beautiful Ones," published in 2019.
