Red Riding Hood is a 2011 American romantic fantasy horror film directed by Catherine Hardwicke, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, and written by David Leslie Johnson. The film is a loose adaptation of the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" collected by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. The story centers on Valerie (Amanda Seyfried), a young woman living in the medieval village of Daggerhorn, which has been terrorized by a werewolf for 20 years. Valerie is in love with woodcutter Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents, Suzette (Virginia Madsen) and Cesaire (Billy Burke), have arranged for her to marry the wealthy blacksmith Henry Lazar (Max Irons). The couple plans to run away together, but their plans are disrupted when the werewolf kills Valerie's older sister, Lucie (Alexandria Maillot). The villagers seek help from witch hunter Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), who warns that the werewolf could be one of the villagers. Throughout the events, Valerie discovers she can communicate with the werewolf, who demands she leave with him, threatening to destroy the village otherwise. Suspicions fall on various individuals, including Peter and Henry. Ultimately, it is revealed that the werewolf is Valerie's father, Cesaire, who seeks to pass his curse onto his daughter. With Peter's help, Valerie manages to kill her father, but Peter is bitten and leaves to learn to control his new nature. Valerie chooses to live in her grandmother's (Julie Christie) house, awaiting Peter's return. The film received negative reviews from critics, holding a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 29 out of 100 on Metacritic. Despite this, with a budget of $42 million, the film grossed approximately $97.8 million worldwide.
