The 1996 American legal crime drama directed by Barry Levinson, based on Lorenzo Carcaterra's 1995 book of the same name, tells the story of four friends—Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra (Jason Patric), Michael Sullivan (Brad Pitt), John Reilly (Ron Eldard), and Tommy Marcano (Billy Crudup), who grew up in the 1960s in New York's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Their childhood was filled with minor offenses and friendship with the local priest, Father Bobby (Robert De Niro). One day, their prank led to tragedy: a stolen hot dog cart accidentally rolled down a subway staircase, severely injuring a man. For this, they were sentenced to the Wilkinson Correctional Facility. Within its walls, they were subjected to brutal abuse and sexual assault by the guards, especially Sean Nokes (Kevin Bacon). Years later, two of the friends, John and Tommy, now gangsters, accidentally encounter Nokes in a bar and kill him in front of witnesses. Michael, now an assistant district attorney, takes on their defense, intending to lose the case to acquit his friends. He involves Father Bobby, who, upon learning of the horrors the boys endured, agrees to perjure himself to save them. The film explores themes of friendship, revenge, and the consequences of violence, showing how childhood traumas affect later life.
