This is a fast-paced racquet practice played indoors, where two players (or four in doubles) take turns striking a small rubber ball against the front wall using short racquets, aiming to make it difficult for the opponent to return the shot. Squash originated in the 1830s at London’s Fleet Prison and was later refined at elite British schools such as Harrow, where students discovered that a soft, "squashable" ball created a more engaging and challenging variation of the existing racquet sports. The essence of the practice lies in maintaining high game tempo, precise shot placement, and strategic movement across the court. Players must strike the ball before it bounces twice, and it may rebound off the side and back walls. Squash demands endurance, quick reflexes, excellent coordination, and tactical awareness. From the 20th century onward, squash spread globally, particularly in Commonwealth countries like Egypt, Australia, the UK, and India, becoming a fixture of the international sports scene. In Egypt, squash has gained near-national sport status, with Egyptian players frequently dominating world rankings. The game is governed by the World Squash Federation (WSF) and features a professional tournament circuit through the PSA World Tour. Although not yet part of the Olympic Games, squash continues to campaign for inclusion. Beyond professional play, it is widely practiced for fitness and recreation, especially in urban sports centers and clubs.
