Tarantula

The 1955 American science fiction horror film directed by Jack Arnold, with a screenplay by Robert M. Fresco and Martin Berkeley, follows Professor Gerald Deemer (Leo G. Carroll), who conducts experiments in his isolated laboratory in the Arizona desert, developing a nutrient intended to solve world hunger. However, the substance causes abnormal growth in test animals, including a tarantula that escapes and begins to grow rapidly. Local doctor Matt Hastings (John Agar) investigates after discovering bodies exhibiting signs of acromegaly that developed within days. Alongside Deemer's new assistant, Stephanie Clayton (Mara Corday), Hastings attempts to stop the giant spider, which starts attacking livestock and humans. The situation escalates as the tarantula reaches the size of a building, threatening the entire region. In the film's climax, the military, including a jet pilot (a young Clint Eastwood in an uncredited role), conducts an aerial napalm attack to destroy the monster. The film stands out among 1950s giant insect movies by attributing the mutation to well-intentioned scientific research rather than nuclear radiation. Filmed in California, it utilized real animals and miniature sets to create the giant spider effect. "Tarantula" received positive reviews for its special effects and atmosphere, becoming one of the best examples of the "giant insect" genre of its time.
