The Creature Walks Among Us

John Sherwood directed this American science fiction horror film of 1956, which closes the Creature from the Black Lagoon trilogy as its third entry. The story follows the Gill-man, an amphibious humanoid creature who, after escaping from the Ocean Harbor Oceanarium in Florida, is recaptured by a team of scientists led by the ruthless Dr. William Barton (Jeff Morrow). During the capture, the creature suffers severe burns, leading the scientists to discover human-like skin beneath its scales and dormant lungs. They perform surgery to transform the Gill-man into a land-dwelling being capable of breathing air and attempt to integrate him into human society. However, Barton's paranoia and jealousy over his wife Marcia (Leigh Snowden) drive him to murder their guide Jed Grant (Gregg Palmer) and frame the creature. Realizing the injustice, the Gill-man breaks free, kills Barton, and returns to the ocean, despite no longer being able to breathe underwater. The film concludes Universal's original classic monster series and presents a darker, more psychologically complex narrative than its predecessors. The creature was portrayed by Don Megowan on land and Ricou Browning underwater.
