The 1971 American Southern Gothic psychological thriller directed by Don Siegel is based on the 1966 novel "A Painted Devil" by Thomas P. Cullinan. Set in 1863 during the American Civil War, the story follows 12-year-old student Amy (Pamelyn Ferdin) who discovers a severely wounded Union corporal, John McBurney (Clint Eastwood), and brings him to the secluded Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies in rural Mississippi. Initially, headmistress Martha Farnsworth (Geraldine Page) intends to hand him over to Confederate forces but decides to nurse him back to health. As McBurney recovers, he begins to manipulate the women in the house, including teacher Edwina Dabney (Elizabeth Hartman), 17-year-old student Carol (Jo Ann Harris), and the enslaved woman Hallie (Mae Mercer), stirring jealousy and tension. His complex relationships with the women lead to a charged atmosphere of betrayal and violence. The film delves into themes of power, sexuality, and morality, creating a tense and dark ambiance. Filming took place in California, with a musical score composed by Lalo Schifrin. Though initially receiving mixed reviews, the film has since been recognized for its deep psychological exploration and has achieved cult status.
