The 1979 American biographical prison thriller, directed and produced by Don Siegel, is based on the true story of the 1962 escape from Alcatraz prison. The screenplay, written by Richard Tuggle, is adapted from the book by J. Campbell Bruce. Clint Eastwood stars as Frank Morris, a charismatic and intelligent inmate known for his successful escapes from other prisons. Upon arriving at Alcatraz, Morris identifies weaknesses in the prison's security and begins planning an escape with brothers John and Clarence Anglin (Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau) and Charley Butts (Larry Hankin). They secretly enlarge the ventilation shafts in their cells, create dummy heads from papier-mâché and human hair to fool the guards, and construct a raft from raincoats. The film also portrays the harsh conditions of prison life, including the cruelty of the guards, psychological pressure, and the despair of the inmates. In the climax, Morris and the Anglin brothers execute their escape, leaving the dummy heads in their beds. Butts loses his nerve at the last moment and remains in his cell. The next day, the guards discover the escape, but the inmates have vanished. The film ends with the prison warden finding a chrysanthemum on Angel Island — a flower cultivated by one of the inmates — hinting at the possibility that the escapees survived. The film received positive reviews for its tense atmosphere, realistic depiction of prison life, and strong performances, particularly Eastwood's.
