The Brave

A 1997 American independent neo-western film directed by Johnny Depp in his directorial debut. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Gregory Mcdonald. The protagonist, Raphael (Johnny Depp), a Native American, lives with his wife Rita (Elpidia Carrillo) and their two children, son Frankie (Cody Lightning) and daughter Marta (Nicole Mancera), in a poverty-stricken community near a garbage dump. Desperate to provide a better future for his family, Raphael agrees to star in a snuff film where he will be tortured and killed on camera in exchange for a substantial sum of money. After receiving an advance payment, he is given one week before the scheduled filming. During these seven days, Raphael strives to strengthen his relationships with his family and come to terms with his impending fate. The film also features characters such as McCarthy (Marlon Brando), the enigmatic producer of the snuff film, and Larry (Marshall Bell), his assistant. The soundtrack was composed by Iggy Pop. "The Brave" premiered at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, receiving mixed reviews. Disheartened by the negative response from American critics, Johnny Depp chose not to release the film in the United States, making it available only in international markets.
