The 2017 American science fantasy western film directed by Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel is a loose adaptation of Stephen King's novel series of the same name. The story centers on 11-year-old Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) from New York City, who experiences visions of a mysterious world, the Dark Tower, and a enigmatic Gunslinger. His parents believe he is mentally ill and plan to send him to a clinic. Jake escapes and discovers a portal leading to Mid-World, where he meets the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba). Roland is on a quest to stop the powerful sorcerer Walter Padick, known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), who aims to destroy the Dark Tower—a structure that holds the universe together. Jake learns he possesses the Shine, a form of psychic ability, making him central to Walter's plans. Together, Roland and Jake face numerous dangers, including monsters and the Man in Black's henchmen. In the climax, Roland defeats Walter and rescues Jake, and they embark on a journey through Mid-World. The film blends elements of fantasy, science fiction, and western genres, exploring themes of destiny, the battle between good and evil, and the resilience of the human spirit.
