The 1973 political thriller, directed by Fred Zinnemann, is based on the novel of the same name by Frederick Forsyth. The film follows a professional assassin known as "The Jackal" (Edward Fox), hired by the French far-right terrorist organization OAS to assassinate President Charles de Gaulle in 1963. After a failed assassination attempt on de Gaulle in 1962, OAS leaders decide to hire an external killer to avoid suspicion from French authorities. The Jackal agrees to the assignment for a substantial fee and meticulously plans the assassination, including obtaining false documents and commissioning a custom-made weapon. French intelligence learns of the plot and assigns police commissioner Claude Lebel (Michael Lonsdale) to locate and stop the Jackal. Lebel organizes a massive operation to track the assassin across Europe. The Jackal employs various disguises and tactics to evade capture, including altering his appearance and eliminating those who might expose him. He infiltrates France disguised as a one-legged veteran, planning to execute the assassination during a public event attended by de Gaulle. On the day of the attempt, the Jackal positions himself in a building opposite the ceremony site, preparing to take the shot. However, Lebel and his team manage to locate his hideout at the last moment. In a tense final scene, the Jackal nearly succeeds, but Lebel bursts into the room and shoots him, preventing the president's murder. The film received positive reviews from critics for its suspense and attention to detail and was nominated for several prestigious awards.
